INTERNATIONAL NETWORKING |
The Society of Midwives obtained membership with ICM
in the year 2003.
The Society of midwives has developed linkages with
Swedish Midwives’ Association and Japanese Academy of
Midwives for furthering maternal health.

ROUND ACTIVITIES |
SOMI takes up simple activities that can be carried
out in the local areas by members guided by senior
members in the different institutes across the
Country.
The Indore chapter inaugurated the Maternal and Child
Health Centre at Govind Nagar Colony in March 2006 and
runs it under the banner of the Society of Midwives
and is supported by Choithram College of Nursing,
Indore.
Safe Motherhood Day and International Midwife Day was
celebrated by all the Chapters in the year 2007 with
support from ANS
The new unit Chapters were motivated with financial
support and guidance to conduct one day Workshop for
labour room nurses.
The chapters were supported to conduct advocacy
meetings and workshops prior to the Conference.

PUBLIC HEALTH |

Responsibilities of a practicing midwife -
competencies for midwifery practice; documentation
and evidence, reporting and analysis, examples and
case studies of different midwifery practice
settings.
Midwifery as an independent profession – issues of
autonomy and regulation , right to practice,
barriers to practice, –legal support for
practicing midwives.
Aids to autonomy- midwifery act, protocols and
manuals, referral guides, social recognition and
government support, policy, role of professional
organizations.
Professional collaboration and partnership with
obstetricians, pediatricians and others for safe
motherhood. |
WOMEN'S AWARENESS, CHOICES AND DECISIONS FOR SAFE
CHILDBIRTH |

Women’s rights and entitlements related to
maternity and maternal health, barriers to safe
motherhood, decision to seek care.
Women’s knowledge, perceptions, practices
regarding pregnancy, childbirth and related
complications including cultural practices.
Community and family support for maternal health –
role of birth companion and TBA, male
participation for maternal health.
Health education and counseling of pregnant
women/family members, birth preparedness, parental
education. |
IMPROVING STANDARDS OF MATERNAL AND NEWBORN CARE |

Maintaining standards in midwifery practice
settings – labour rooms and antenatal clinics,
postpartum care units, family planning centers.
Interventions for saving life and disability
during pregnancy related complications including
rational use of drugs and interventions.
Bio-medical waste management and maintaining
universal precautions and standards for infection
control.
Newborn care – immediate assessment,
resuscitation, routine newborn care, breast
feedings, care of newborns with special needs. |
ENABLING MID WIFERY PRACTICE THROUGH BETTER
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND RESEARCH |

Midwifery education – content and quality, gaps
and strengths for enabling practice, curricula
review and strengthening.
SBA training and other in-service training
Programmes for midwives for upgrading skill,
updating knowledge and enhancing commitment.
Interventions and teaching designs to enhance the
quality of midwifery education, research for
